The 20th Annual Boulder County Cup and other news

A couple of quick tennis news items.

The 20th Annual Boulder County Cup needs you!

First, it’s that time of year again when cross-county tennis association rivals LTA, CVTA, and BTA duke it out for the prestigious Boulder County Cup. BTA would like to keep this cup for yet another year, so we need you!

In this fun, World Team Tennis-style event (coaching and subbing allowed) each association puts together four teams, six players to a team. Each head to head includes: women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles matches. So we need men and women rated from 3.0 through 4.0 to fill out our four teams (two teams are 3.0/3.5 and two are 3.5/4.0)

This this year’s event will be hosted by LTA at Quail Courts in Longmont on September 28th (rain date: 9/29). Our two 3.5/4.0 teams will play in the morning (roughly 9 to noon) and our two 3.0/3.5 teams will play in the afternoon (roughly noon to 3:00). Food and drink (and we mean drink) will be provided. Please join us for this fun community event, play some great tennis, make new friends, and help BTA bring the Boulder County Cup home again!

If you are a BTA member and are interested in participating, contact one of our two BTA co-captains: Joyce Kelly at shermanjm@yahoo.com or Alia Ghandour at ibualia@yahoo.com. Please include 1) your full name as used by USTA, 2) your USTA rating, 3) your cell phone number, and 4) which of the following days you are available to practice (9/11, 9/14, 9/17 and 9/26). And of course any questions you might have. We look forward to seeing you on the courts.

A new BTA Board president is chosen

At the last BTA board meeting on July 31, Michael Xu, then president of the BTA Board of Directors, announced that he would be temporarily re-locating to the Bay Area. (At least one of the factors involved in this decision was the lack of any tennis facility where a working man and tennis ace like Michael could play evening indoor tennis through the cold months.)

Since Michael has done a huge amount of research on the issues facing Boulder tennis and has an unmatched set of contacts with all the active participants in the Boulder tennis equation, rather than resigning, the board encouraged him to simply step down as board president and stay on as a board member, working remotely from his temporary base. To which he agreed. With that settled, the board then voted in Don Bergal as the new board president. Don has served as a board member for over six months, and has been actively involved in all of our recent tennis initiatives. Our thanks to Don for stepping into Michael’s big (tennis) shoes.

That’s all the news for now!
