Tennis community publishes full page in the Daily Camera

A partnership of concerned Boulder tennis citizens has brought one of their goals to fruition. Namely, the publishing of an ad in the Boulder Daily Camera, page seven, full-page, in the first section of the print edition, no less.

The ad, directed to “City of Boulder officials,” admonishes them for their part in allowing the demolition of twenty-seven local courts (RMTC and CU South campus), their decision to come out against a potential replacement for many of those indoor and outdoor courts at a Gunbarrel location, and their long-term failure to address a dire need for a Boulder public tennis center, complete with indoor courts.

It also mentioned a general disregard for the now unfolding court shortage that the tennis community has been warning about for years (not a single new public court has been built in Boulder in more than twenty-five years).

Most importantly, the letter asks that the City take action to “provide publicly accessible indoor courts and a sufficient supply of outdoor courts.” It was signed by 370 members of our local tennis community.

The ad was the result of a fund-raising effort via a GoFundMe page, and a petition-signing effort via a Change.org page.

While the Boulder Tennis Association recognizes that the City of Boulder and the Parks and Recreation Department have taken some initial steps toward addressing these issues, any serious results from these plans are years away – and funding is far from assured. It is apparent that a sizeable share of the tennis community feels the effort is too little and too late. While we on the BTA Board will continue to meet and work with the powers that be to expedite solutions, we can only approve of the letter’s intent to highlight the problem.

See you on the courts!
